Very young children often cry because they see those around them crying. Although the child cannot comprehend the finality of death, she may indeed miss the person who has died and be sad. A child may regress to an earlier developmental stage and forget his potty training or begin to suck his thumb again. Be patient; he will regain the appropriate behaviors for his age. Very young children are trying to master preliminary separation from parents and in grief may display acute separation anxiety. All children are barometers for the adults around them. When their family members are preoccupied with their own grief, it is not uncommon for children to become very irritable and angry and to display difficult behavior.
